What Is Spot Tuckpointing: Pros & Cons

Updated: Dec 11, 2024

Homeowners and contractors throughout Chicago tend to lean towards the spot tuckpointing option when damage has been sighted in their brick wall. Although the inexpensive price tag is quite attractive, this quick fix is only meant to be a band-aid and does not actually solve or stop the deterioration in your brick structure.

Spot Tuckpointing

Spot tuckpointing is a tuckpointing process in which only the major cracks are repaired. This technique is typically used when the brick structure is in good shape and only needs to patch a small section. This however, will not halt the underlying issues in your brick wall or structure and will not restore the integrity.

Pros To Spot Tuckpointing:

  1. Price: The main reason people go with the spot tuckpointing option is due the cheaper price. Although this is not the most cost effective in the long-run, this can be the best route for those on a budget to mask the issue until they can afford the proper repair.

  1. Aesthetic: If done properly, this can be a good option to raise the aesthetic of your brick work without disrupting the mortar joints.

Cons To Spot Tuckpointing:

  1. Not Cost Efficient: Since this does not remove the damaged mortar joints, the overall issues causing the damage will not be solved and continue to deteriorate. This option can actually cost you more money in the long-run.

  1. Unattractive: If done poorly, this technique can actually make your brick chimney, wall, or fireplace look worse. Color matching the existing mortar can be tough.

  1. Useless: If the project is too big and the whole structure needs tuckpointing, then there is no point spot tuckpointing. Spot pointing is typically only recommended when brick work is newer, not reaching the end of its lifespan.
