What Is Chimney Tuckpointing

When the mortar on your chimney starts to degrade, tuckpointing is the technique used to restore it. After evening out the existing mortar, new mortar is then filled between the bricks with a contrasting color. After a mason applies the new mortar,

they then round it out and add lime putty between the bricks for a fresh look. Mortar restoration is not only important for visual aesthetics, but for the structural integrity of your brick chimney as well.

What Is The Difference Between Tuckpointing & Repointing?

Repointing is the process that removes old mortar from a chimney joint and replaces it with new mortar. Whereas tuckpointing takes that extra step in color matching the brick and applies lime putty over the mortar joints to give it that crisp look. Tuckpointing not only looks good, but provides a much better seal and helps keep the moisture out.

Common Signs That You Need Chimney Tuckpointing

Over time, the mortar in your chimney will naturally begin to deteriorate due to weather and temperature conditions. If you notice loose bricks, crumbling mortar, or large gaps in your chimney, it may be time to consider our expert contractors for tuckpointing and restoration. Tuckpointing can be done anytime of the year, although the temperature in the spring and fall are much more ideal and will not require any speed curing additives for your chimney mortar.

It may be time to tuckpoint if you notice the following symptoms in your chimney structure:

  • Loose Bricks; When mortar crumbles you get loose bricks which causes structural issues for the chimney.

  • Crumbling or Deteriorating Mortar Joints; Mortar flaking or crumbling around your chimney is a clear sign you need tuckpointing. The bond of your mortar is weak and can cause issues such as water leaks, loose bricks and more.

  • Mortar Cracks; Even the thinnest cracks can cause water leaks. Cracks also can expand from freezing water, then thawing with seasonal changes in Chicagoland.

  • Discolored Mortar; When you can see the color of the mortar looking weathered or part of your mortar isn’t matching in color.

  • Visual Deep Mortar Gaps; Another clear sign that you need tuckpointing. Cracks allow water to seep in, which could lead to serious water damage.

  • Spalling Bricks; Chicagoland’s freezing temperatures can cause spalling or cracks in your brickwork

  • If Your Chimney Hasn’t Been Tuck Pointed in 15-20 Years; If you have an older chimney then it most likely needs some restoration to ensure it’s structurally sound.
