What Is The Difference Between Tuckpointing & Repointing?
Repointing is the process that removes old mortar from a chimney joint and replaces it with new mortar. Whereas tuckpointing takes that extra step in color matching the brick and applies lime putty over the mortar joints to give it that crisp look. Tuckpointing not only looks good, but provides a much better seal and helps keep the moisture out.
Common Signs That You Need Chimney Tuckpointing
Over time, the mortar in your chimney will naturally begin to deteriorate due to weather and temperature conditions. Mortar Cracks; Even the thinnest cracks can cause water leaks. Cracks also can expand from freezing water, then thawing with seasonal changes in Chicagoland.
Discolored Mortar; When you can see the color of the mortar looking weathered or part of your mortar isn’t matching in color.
Visual Deep Mortar Gaps; Another clear sign that you need tuckpointing. Cracks allow water to seep in, which could lead to serious water damage.
